Ragtime (MS) Sept. 23 & 24, 29-Oct. 2, 5-9, 2016
This sweeping musical-portrait of early 20th century America tells the story of three families - an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician - in the pursuit of the American Dream. Called by Time Magazine "A triumph for the stage," this acclaimed production, performed on our stage twice in our 100-year history, is filled with pageantry, emotion and confidence, bursting onto the stage like no other musical. A perfect show to bring 100 years full circle!
Arthur’s Halloween (YT) Oct. 14-16, 21-23, 2016
“Arthur” fans will be delighted with this charming musical adaptation of this friendly aardvark and all his buddies, first written for the Playhouse in 2006 by our very own Charles Corritore and Michael Malthaner, with the blessing of Arthur-creator Marc Brown. It’s Halloween and Arthur finds everything a bit scary, from his sister D.W.’s costume, to his morning snack, and especially the spooky old house on the corner they refer to as the “witch’s” house.
A Streetcar Named Desire (MS) Nov. 4 & 5, 10-13, 16-20, 2016
Desire takes on a whole new meaning in this exquisite, undeniable classic from America’s most celebrated playwright Tennessee Williams. Blanche DuBois, a fading Southern belle, arrives unexpectedly on the doorstep of her sister, Stella, and her brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. Over the course of one hot, sultry New Orleans summer, Blanche’s fragile facade slowly crumbles as she meets her match in the rough-hewn and hyper-masculine Stanley. An undisputed masterpiece perfect for our 100th!
Scrooge (MS) Dec, 2 & 3, 8-11, 14-18, 2016
Ebenezer Scrooge has appeared on the Playhouse stage more than any other character in our history, so we have invited him back for our 100th holiday! This heartwarming musical, filled with jubilant musical numbers, dazzling costumes, is rooted in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Join Ebenezer, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, and a stage full of Dickensian characters in this smash- hit musical!
New Year’s Eve Birthday Bash - A Salute to 100 Years of Broadway December 31, 2016
The tradition continues and it’s bigger than ever! Join us for our Birthday Bash as we salute 100 years of Broadway featuring the outstanding Playhouse orchestra and our finest vocalists. It’s the best of Broadway, the best of the Playhouse topped off with champagne, chocolate and, of course, a birthday cake. It’s sure to be a sellout!
The Lion King JR (YT) Jan 20-22, 27-29, 2017
The African savannah comes to life with Simba and Nala, Pumbaa and Timon, Mufasa and Scar, and more unforgettable characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again in this inspiring, coming-of-age story. This vibrant tale has captivated worldwide audiences. With Sir Elton John’s music, dazzling costumes, and extraordinary talent, this is a show not to be missed.
A Chorus Line (MS) Feb. 17 & 18, 23-26, March 1-5, 2017
This stunning musical tribute salutes all dancers who have trod the boards. It tells of the achingly poignant ambitions of professional Broadway “gypsies” trying to land a job in a show’s chorus line. It is a powerful metaphor for all human inspiration and a brilliant fusion of dance, song and compelling drama. We thank the thousands of Playhouse performers who have danced on a Playhouse stage. You are truly a singular sensation!
Noises Off (MS) March 24 & 25, 30-April 2, 5-9, 2017
The Playhouse will present nothing but the best in our 100th season, so our comedy offering is NOISES OFF! With the opening night of the farce Nothing On just hours away, the cast stumbles through final dress rehearsal - lines forgotten, love triangles unraveling and sardines flying everywhere. It’s complete pandemonium, not to mention one gut-busting laugh after another.
Showboat, In Concert (SE) April 21-23, 2017
Set against the backdrop of America’s deep South at the turn of the 20th Century, it tells a powerful story of freedom, loyalty, and above all love. Join us as we hop on board the Cotton Blossom and get swept away by one of the most romantic musicals of all time, featuring the timeless songs “Ol’ Man River,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” as well as the beautiful “You Are Love.”
James and the Giant Peach (YT) May 5-7, 12-14, 2017
Based on one of Roald Dahl’s poignantly quirky stories, it features a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming book. This adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery follows James as he befriends a collection of singing insects and together they ride the giant piece of fruit to the depths of the ocean and the height of the Empire State Building. Using their quick wits and creative thinking, the residents of the giant peach learn to live and work together as a family.
Little Shop of Horrors (MS) June 9 & 10, 15-18, 21-25, 2017
A charming tongue-in-cheek, sci-fi smash musical comedy about a meek floral assistant, Seymour, who stumbles across a new breed of plant he names "Audrey II," after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down-and-out Seymour as long as he keeps feeding it BLOOD. This is the fan-favorite pick from our audiences.
Oklahoma! (MS) July 7 & 8, 13-16, 19-23, 2017
The first collaboration of famed partners Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II is set in Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the 20th-Century. The spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the backdrop for the love story between Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a beautiful farm girl. Oklahoma! Is considered the first American musical and we are proud to create it for you as the last show of our 100th Season!
