This Broadway musical adaptation of the 1988 film, starring the comic trio Steve Martin, Michael Caine and Glenn Headley, features a laugh-a-minute book by Jeffrey Lane based on the film script, and a spectacular score by David Yazbeck ( The Full Monty ).

The story centers on two con men trying to out-con each other. The first is suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by bilking rich ladies out of their money. The other is a small-time crook, Freddy Benson, who elicits “chump change” from women by playing on their sympathies with stories of his ailing grandmother. The two meet on a train and Lawrence promises to take Freddy under his wing and show him the ropes. They soon find out the town isn’t big enough for both of them, so they make a bet that the first one to extract $50,000 from the American Soap Queen and heiress, Christine Colgate, wins the ability to stay while the other leaves town.

The Erie Playhouse has come up with its own headlining trio of comics – Ken Brundage (Lawrence Jameson), Jerry Gill (Freddy Benson) and Kate Murosky (Christine Colgate). Other principal roles are covered by Nick Iacobucci (Andre, the not-too-honest Chief of Police), Linda Troyer (Muriel Eubanks, a wealthy widow and a welcome victim of Lawrence’s cons) and Kristen Henry (Jolene, an Oklahoma oil heiress intent on marrying Lawrence).

Featured in the singing/dancing ensemble are Kate Amatuzzo, Rebecca Coleman, Bobby Copfer, Marann Curtis, Richard Davis, Ryan D. Eldridge, Leah Johnson, Dan Mifkovic, Lili Morton and David Shaffer.

Pit Singers: Juanita Kleckner, Claudia Skerlong, Jerry Villella and Randall P. Way.
