Synopsis: Before Rent, there was tick, tick… BOOM!  Jonathan Larson’s semi-autobiographical musical tells the tale of a struggling composer living the bohemian life and facing an existential crisis on the eve of his 30th birthday. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue, and yet Jon is still waiting on tables and trying to write the great American musical. Containing fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors and a band, tick, tick… BOOM!  takes you on the playwright/composer’s journey that led to a Broadway blockbuster.

Character descriptions: Please note the actors do not have to be these ages but of an age to believably portray these characters on stage.

  • Jon: Late 20s-early 30s; tenor A2-A4. A struggling composer on the brink of his 30th birthday. Charming, passionate, and creative. To Jon, the world spins on its axis around him. • Michael: Late 20s-early 30s; warm bari-tenor, full voice to an F. Jonathan’s gay best friend from childhood; an actor turned successful marketing executive. He is helpful, kind, funny, and outgoing; can have an explosive temper. Also doubles multiple roles.
  • Susan: Mid 20s-early 30s; strong belt A flat to D. Jonathan’s girlfriend, a dancer. Sexy, whip-smart, and fiercely independent.
