Journey to a Trauma Informed Life

Aaron Darold Awarded 2026 David & Judy Matthews Scholarship

The Erie Playhouse is proud to announce Aaron Darold the 2026 David & Judy Matthews Scholarship award recipient!

Aaron is a graduate of Fairview High School and will be attending Ohio University beginning in the fall pursuing a BFA in musical theatre.

Aaron expressed in his application, “five years from now, I hope to be a professional working artist who is passionate, adaptable, and open to the many paths a career in theatre can take. No matter where that path leads, the lessons I learned at the Erie Playhouse will remain at the center of my work. The Playhouse taught me that theatre is about connection, generosity, and community – and that when you give people love through your art, they give it back.

The David & Judy Matthews Scholarship was designed to be awarded to a student attending school to pursue a career in a theatre or performing arts-related field who demonstrated a commitment to the theatre arts and the ability to carry on the legacy of David and Judy Matthews, while embodying the core values of the Erie Playhouse: inclusivity, professionalism, gratitude, impact, and passion.

Aaron leads with confidence, respect, and genuine care for his peers,” writes Fairview High School digital arts teacher Nicole Daley. “His classmates admire him, not just for his skill and talent, but for his kindness, patience, and willingness to help anyone who needs it. His organization and work ethic are unmatched, and the time he dedicates behind the scenes shows clearly in the quality of his presentations and leadership.”

This scholarship was created in memory of former Playhouse managing director David Matthews, as well as honoring his wife, first lady of the Playhouse and legend in her own rite, Judy.
