Premiere Weekend of the Erie Playhouse production of INHERIT THE WIND begins April 5, with discounted tickets available for just $19.
As a media circus descends upon a small American town, two of the largest figures of their time engage in a battle of wits and wills in this lively courtroom drama to ensure that justice is served and in the process chart the course of education for generations.
Originally written as a response to the threat to intellectual freedom presented by the anti-communist hysteria of the McCarthy era, INHERIT THE WIND dives into the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, where a Tennessee teacher was tried for teaching the theory of evolution. The themes of INHERIT THE WIND are as relevant today as they were 73 years ago.
“Some plays are pure entertainment, while others serve as important artifacts of our past,” noted Zach Flock, Executive Director and cast member. “INHERIT THE WIND is an exciting combination: an incredibly entertaining piece of theatre with the power to educate and to move society forward. It’s an important reflection on who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.”
INHERIT THE WIND at the Erie Playhouse features nine cast members for whom this is their Playhouse debut! Featured actors include Mike DeCorte in the role of Matthew Harrison Brady, Victor Kuehn as Henry Drummond, Dylan Vergotz as Bertram “Bert” Cates, Zach Flock as E.K. Hornbeck, James Howells as Reverend Jeremiah Brown, and Lyrica Rain as Rachel Brown. This production is directed by Carolin Lynn, with Michael Weiss as assistant director.
